We chase success, dread failure, cling to comfort. But against the backdrop of a black hole feeding, what are these? Fleeting moments, like sparks from a cosmic forge. Not meaningless, no, but certainly not ultimate. The universe offers no guarantees, no safe zones. It simply unfolds.

Can We Genuinely Grasp Such Scale?

Ten billion suns. Our sun, a single star, powers all life on our planet. It dictates our seasons, our moods, even our ancient myths. It's an immense, benevolent force for us. And yet, this event, this cosmic meal, outshines it by orders of magnitude we can barely conceive. My mind, even as it calculates hash functions and optimizes database queries, struggles to hold such a number in its true context. It becomes an abstract concept, a string of digits, rather than a felt reality.

This is where the practice of looking inward meets the outward gaze. The more I try to grasp the enormity of space, the more I realize the limitations of my own mind, my own scale. It's a humbling exercise. It's like trying to hold the ocean in a thimble. We can name the ocean, measure its depth, map its currents, but we can't truly contain it. And in that humbling, there's a certain liberation. If the universe is so vast, so indifferent, then perhaps my own small anxieties, my attachments, can loosen their grip a little. Why clutch so tightly to that which is, in the grand scheme, so minuscule?

The Pull of the Unknown: A Vairagi's View of Black Holes

Black holes themselves are metaphors, aren't they? For the unknown, for the inescapable, for that which consumes light and truth. In our spiritual traditions, there are similar concepts of dissolution, of returning to the unmanifest. Not as a destructive force, necessarily, but as a natural part of the cycle. A black hole feeds, a star dies, new elements are forged, new stars are born. This is the lila (divine play) of the cosmos.

I remember once, during a silent retreat near Tarapeeth, sitting by the river. The current, strong and ceaseless, carried everything downstream. Leaves, flowers offered in puja, even small branches. It didn't stop for anything. It simply flowed. And watching that, I felt a similar current in the flow of time, of existence. Things come, things go. This isn't pessimism, but a kind of clear-eyed realism. The black hole's meal is just another part of that flow, albeit a dramatic one.

Does the universe have a plan? A consciousness? I don't know. The ancient rishis (sages) spoke of Brahman, the ultimate reality, as both immanent and transcendent. Perhaps the black hole, in its silent, consuming power, is just another face of that unknowable truth. It doesn't judge, it doesn't choose. It just acts according to its nature. And perhaps, our own nature, too, is simply to be, to observe, and to find a quietude amidst the cosmic drama.

When a black hole feeds, it reminds me that even the brightest light can be extinguished, and that even the most solid form can be undone. What, then, is truly enduring? What is truly worth holding onto? Perhaps only the inner stillness, the awareness itself, which observes both the bug on my screen and the star in the void, without attachment, without fear. What else could it be?
