These aren’t luxuries anymore; they’re often the capillaries of survival, especially in a country like India where digital inclusion has become a major push.

I remember a few years ago, during some unrest in a different part of the country, my cousin, who runs a small crafts business, couldn't process payments for nearly two days because the internet was down. Her customers, mostly tourists, didn't carry much cash. She lost significant sales. It wasn't just about entertainment; it was about her livelihood, her family's well-being. These aren't abstract policy discussions; they are real, tangible impacts on countless lives, a sudden severing of the digital blackout that many have come to depend on.

Is Our Dependence a Weakness or a Strength?

This brings up an interesting tension. We strive for connectivity, for a world where information flows freely and instantly. We celebrate initiatives like Digital India. Yet, this very connectedness creates a vulnerability. If everything is online, then everything can be taken offline. It’s a paradox, isn’t it? But we also must acknowledge the transient nature of these connections. The internet, for all its marvels, is a tool. And like any tool, it can be put down, or taken away. Does this make our dependence a weakness? Or does it simply highlight the need for a more nuanced understanding of technology's role in our lives? It’s not about rejecting technology, but about understanding its limits, its potential for absence.

The Silent Spaces: What Fills the Void?

When the internet goes silent, what fills that void? Sometimes, it’s silence itself. A forced quietude. Sometimes, it’s a return to older ways of communicating. People talk face-to-face more, perhaps. They rely on local gossip networks, on word-of-mouth. Information still flows, but differently, slower, often with more distortion. The algorithms that shape our news feeds are gone, replaced by human filters, by rumor and personal accounts.

As a cybersecurity professional, I also think about the other implications. A digital blackout can be a double-edged sword for security. On one hand, it can prevent certain types of cyberattacks that rely on active connections. On the other, it can make it harder to communicate about ongoing threats, to coordinate responses, or to access critical intelligence. The CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team) and SIA-India (Satellite Industry Association of India) recently released joint guidelines for India's space sector cybersecurity, recognizing the need to protect these vital infrastructures. A lesson in remembering that true connection, true understanding, often happens outside the glowing screen.
