It was past midnight. The cicadas outside my window in Chandannagar were singing their endless song, a constant hum that often blends into the background of my thoughts. But tonight, there was another hum, a more insistent one, coming from the server room at work. A client’s system, one we’d just shored up with new firewalls and intrusion detection, was showing anomalous traffic. A ping flood, then something more subtle, a probe. Another day, another battle in the digital realm. The news had spoken of it, of course, the increasing surge in cyberattacks across India, hitting everything from energy grids to financial institutions. But seeing it flicker across a monitor, a silent war unfolding byte by byte, it feels different. It always does.

It’s not just the big, dramatic breaches that make headlines, though those are certainly alarming. It's the constant, low-level hum of attempts, the probing, the trying to find a weak point. For a nation like India, rapidly digitising, building out its infrastructure, this isn't just an inconvenience. It's a fundamental challenge to the very fabric of how things run.
Think about it. Our electricity grids, our banking systems, even the simple process of booking a train ticket, they all rely on interconnected digital systems. When these systems are attacked, it's not just data that's at risk. It’s trust. It’s stability. It’s the peace of mind that allows us to go about our days without worrying if the lights will stay on or if our savings are safe. This isn’t a war with tanks and soldiers in the traditional sense, but its impact can be just as disruptive, just as unsettling. It's a war fought in the unseen, in the lines of code and the packets of data that crisscross the globe.
What Does This Digital Unrest Say About Our Minds?
Sometimes, when I’m debugging a particularly tricky piece of code, I think about the human mind. The mind, too, has its vulnerabilities, its unpatched holes, its legacy systems. We build layers of protection around our inner peace, our santosha (contentment), but just like a server, we can be probed, exploited. A stray comment, a missed deadline, a memory that resurfaces unbidden. These are our personal cyberattacks, aren't they?
The constant need to defend, to patch, to update our digital infrastructure, it mirrors our own inner struggles. We are constantly trying to protect our peace, our privacy, our sense of self in a world that seems intent on extracting, on observing, on knowing. It's an exhausting process, this constant vigilance. And I wonder, how much energy do we have left for truly living, for contemplating the bigger questions, when we are so busy defending our digital borders?
The rise of these attacks, the ingenuity of the attackers, it's a reflection of human nature itself. The desire to exploit, to gain, to disrupt. And on the other side, the desire to protect, to build, to secure. It’s an ancient dance, just in a new arena. The maya (illusion) of security is always there, whether it's a physical wall or a digital firewall.
Can We Find Stillness Amidst the Digital Storm?
So, what does this surge in cyberattacks mean for how humans live and think? It means a heightened sense of vulnerability, certainly. It means a need for greater awareness, for understanding the invisible forces at play. It means that the concept of 'border security' has expanded far beyond physical lines on a map. It’s in the cloud, it’s in the servers, it’s in every device we touch.
For a Vairagi, the focus isn't on eliminating the storm, for storms will always come. It's about how one stands in the storm. Can we remain unattached to the outcome, even when the stakes are high? Can we do our duty, secure the systems, educate the people, without letting the fear and anxiety consume us? I think we must try. We must build better defences, yes, but we must also cultivate a deeper inner resilience. Because the world will always find new ways to test our boundaries, digital or otherwise. The question isn't if the attacks will stop, but if we can find our quiet center amidst the constant hum of battle.
It’s late now. The client’s system is stable, for now. The cicadas are still singing. The digital world sleeps, but not entirely. There are always eyes watching, always fingers probing. And we, the quiet watchers, must learn to discern the signal from the noise, the true threat from the endless chatter.
