When a Temple Becomes a Machine: What Does Technology in Temples Mean?

It was late, past midnight, the kind of quiet that settles over our Kolkata lanes only when the last hawker has packed up and the stray dogs have found their spots. I was debugging a rather stubborn vulnerability in a client’s network, a subtle privilege escalation bug that kept eluding me. My phone buzzed, a news alert from some English daily I follow only for the sheer novelty of it: “In India's Hindu temples, robots replace live elephants.”

Robots. In temples. My first thought wasn’t outrage, or even surprise, but a faint, almost imperceptible smile. Of course. Why not? We put satellites in orbit to chant mantras, stream live darshan (sacred viewing) on YouTube, and now, mechanical pachyderms. This whole idea of technology in temples isn’t new, really. We’ve always used the best of our craft, our shilpa, to adorn the divine. From intricate carvings to massive bronze bells, from ingenious water systems for ablutions to the sheer architectural marvels themselves, our ancestors were engineers and artists, too. They didn’t have microchips, but they had their own cutting-edge. So, what’s genuinely different now?

Is It Still Sacred if a Robot Serves the Deity?

The news report mentioned the use of robotic elephants in Kerala, a move prompted by animal welfare concerns. A noble cause, no doubt. But it set me thinking about the essence of ritual. A pujari (priest) performs the aarti (worship with lamps), his hands moving with practiced grace, his voice resonating with devotion. There's a certain vibration, a human connection, that fills the space. Can a robot replicate that? It can mimic the movements, play the recorded chants, even spray synthetic fragrance.

I remember visiting the Kalighat temple many years ago, the crush of people, the raw energy, the sweat, the flowers, the sheer clamor of faith. It’s chaotic, yes, but intensely alive. There’s a human element, a shared intention, a collective consciousness that’s hard to quantify. Does a robot, however perfectly programmed, contribute to that collective energy? Or does it merely perform a function, like a glorified vending machine for blessings?

As a vairagi, I try to cultivate detachment, to observe without judgment. The form isn’t the essence, true. Whether a deity is worshipped in a grand temple or under a simple tree, the devotion is what matters. So, if a robotic elephant allows for devotion to continue without exploiting a living creature, perhaps it’s a net positive. It’s practical, efficient, perhaps even more hygienic. But does efficiency always equate to sanctity? I’m not sure.

The Myth of Vishvakarma and Our Own Creations

The Puranas speak of Vishvakarma, the divine architect, the cosmic engineer. He built Lanka for Kubera, Dwarka for Krishna, and fashioned the weapons of the gods. He represents the divine capacity for creation, for crafting order out of chaos. In a way, every engineer, every programmer, every artisan carries a spark of Vishvakarma. When we build intricate systems, when we design elegant code, we are, in our own small way, mirroring that divine act of creation.

So, when we use technology in temples, are we simply extending Vishvakarma’s legacy? Are these robots and AI-powered systems our modern-day equivalent of the magnificent chariots or flying Vimanas of lore? Perhaps. The impulse to build, to innovate, to make things better or easier, is deeply human. And spiritual traditions, far from being static, have always adapted. Consider the printing press, which once revolutionized the spread of scriptures. Or the internet, which now allows millions to connect with their faith from anywhere.

The real question, I think, isn’t whether technology can be used, but how. Does it enhance the spiritual experience, or does it dilute it? Does it foster genuine connection, or does it create a veneer of convenience that hides a deeper disconnect? We are so quick to embrace the new, to optimize, to streamline. But some things, perhaps, resist optimization. Some things need the slow, imperfect, wonderfully human touch.

What Does Detachment Teach Us About Our Tools?

My work often involves guarding digital fortresses, understanding the intricate dance of data and algorithms. I see the power, and the peril, of our creations every day. A well-designed system can protect, connect, and inform. A flawed one can bring down an empire, or at least a major corporation. The tools themselves are neutral. It’s the intention, the awareness, the bhavana behind their use that matters.

When I think of a robot performing a sacred duty, I wonder about the minds that designed it, the hands that built it, and the hearts that decided it was a good idea. Is it driven by genuine reverence, a desire to improve the experience for devotees, or by something else entirely – perhaps efficiency for its own sake, or a fascination with novelty? This isn't a critique, mind you, just an observation from a quiet corner of Bengal, as I watch the world rush headlong into its next invention.

The path of vairagya (detachment) isn’t about rejecting the world or its innovations. It’s about not being entangled by them, about seeing them for what they are: tools, transient forms, not the ultimate reality. So, if a robot in a temple helps someone find a moment of peace, a sliver of connection, then perhaps it serves its purpose. But we must be careful not to mistake the machine for the mystery, the mechanism for the magic.

What do we lose, I wonder, when the rustle of leaves gives way to the hum of a server, or the rhythmic breath of an elephant is replaced by the whirring of gears? Is it just the superficial, or something deeper, something we haven’t quite learned to name yet?
